A quarterly magazine about Utah's wildlife published by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR).
Many U.S. state wildlife agencies publish magazines. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) was no exception. With limited resources, the editor, copy editor, and I managed to publish a nice-looking and informative quarterly magazine. Wildlife biologists wrote most articles, and field employees shot most of the photos.
Unfortunately, the DWR did no publication marketing, pursued no advertisers, and sent out no renewal notices. Not surprisingly, the magazine's circulation dropped to around 400 subscribers.
With a production budget of over $100,000 per year, I argued strongly to the DWR management that it was time to end the magazine while redirecting those funds to improving their website, which received tens of millions of visits each year. They finally accepted the obvious after about three years and ended the magazine. From what I've heard, there is still occasional talk within the agency about reviving the magazine.
